Cat Rapid or Labored Breathing: What It May Mean and How Imaging Can Help

4 Paws Imaging Centers provides advanced diagnostic imaging — including echocardiograms, ECGs, and Holter monitoring — to help your veterinarian understand what is happening with your pet’s heart. We do not provide primary or emergency treatment; our role is to deliver the diagnostic imaging your vet needs to guide your pet’s care.

Common Causes of Labored Breathing

Breathing that seems faster, harder, or more effortful than usual — even at rest — is worth having evaluated, since it can be linked to the heart as well as the lungs.

  • Congestive heart failure
  • Fluid around the lungs or in the chest
  • An enlarged heart or heart valve disease
  • Airway or lung disease
  • Anxiety, heat, or overexertion

How Cardiac Imaging Helps Diagnose This

Because breathing changes can stem from the heart or lungs, your vet may request cardiac imaging to check whether the heart is contributing.

  • Echocardiogram to look for fluid buildup, valve leakage, or an enlarged heart
  • ECG to identify rhythm problems that reduce circulation
  • Holter monitor for intermittent breathing changes that come and go

What Happens Next

We provide your cat's veterinarian with full imaging results to help determine whether the heart, lungs, or another cause is responsible.

If your veterinarian has recommended imaging, or you would like to ask about scheduling, contact 4 Paws Imaging Centers at (630) 746-1382. We see patients by appointment only and work closely with your primary veterinarian to coordinate care.
