Dog Lethargy: What It May Mean and How Imaging Can Help
4 Paws Imaging Centers provides advanced diagnostic imaging — including echocardiograms, ECGs, and Holter monitoring — to help your veterinarian understand what is happening with your pet’s heart. We do not provide primary or emergency treatment; our role is to deliver the diagnostic imaging your vet needs to guide your pet’s care.
Common Causes of Lethargy
Low energy, reduced interest in play, or difficulty keeping up on walks can have many causes — and heart disease is one your veterinarian may want to rule out, especially if it comes on gradually.
- Heart disease reducing blood flow and oxygen delivery
- Abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias)
- Anemia or other systemic illness
- Pain or joint disease
- Underlying organ disease

How Cardiac Imaging Helps Diagnose This
If your veterinarian suspects your dog's lethargy is linked to the heart, cardiac imaging can provide a clear picture of what's going on.
- Echocardiogram to assess heart muscle strength and valve function
- ECG to detect rhythm abnormalities that can cause fatigue
- Holter monitor to capture rhythm changes over 24+ hours of normal activity
What Happens Next
Results are sent to your dog's regular veterinarian so they can confirm a diagnosis and build an appropriate treatment plan.
If your veterinarian has recommended imaging, or you would like to ask about scheduling, contact 4 Paws Imaging Centers at (630) 746-1382. We see patients by appointment only and work closely with your primary veterinarian to coordinate care.
