Dog Coughing: What It May Mean and How Imaging Can Help
4 Paws Imaging Centers provides advanced diagnostic imaging — including echocardiograms, ECGs, and Holter monitoring — to help your veterinarian understand what is happening with your pet’s heart. We do not provide primary or emergency treatment; our role is to deliver the diagnostic imaging your vet needs to guide your pet’s care.
Common Causes of Coughing
A persistent or worsening cough can point to a respiratory issue, but in many pets — especially older ones — it can also be a sign of underlying heart disease.
- Congestive heart failure (fluid buildup near the lungs)
- An enlarged heart pressing on the airway
- Heartworm disease
- Chronic bronchitis or airway disease
- Kennel cough or a respiratory infection

How Cardiac Imaging Helps Diagnose This
When a dog's cough may be heart-related, your veterinarian may recommend imaging to look closely at heart size, function, and rhythm.
- Echocardiogram to evaluate heart chambers, valves, and pumping function
- ECG to check for abnormal heart rhythms that can contribute to coughing
- Holter monitor for pets with intermittent or unexplained symptoms
What Happens Next
We share detailed imaging results and a written report with your dog's primary veterinarian, who will use those findings to determine next steps and any needed treatment.
If your veterinarian has recommended imaging, or you would like to ask about scheduling, contact 4 Paws Imaging Centers at (630) 746-1382. We see patients by appointment only and work closely with your primary veterinarian to coordinate care.
